Aside from the meanness of the joke it refers to a real issue here. Often I hear magicians complain that the audience declined the offer to be shown some magic. This often hurts the magician. But often those magicians fail to understand that sometimes people really do not want to see any magic.
This strip also features the first appearance of "Cathy" who later got to be the female assistant on stage. Just imagine that after she understood that she cannot bear any children she needed a change in her life. And being the female assistant of a magician, was the was to go.
